Message from Assistant Superintendent - Pupil Special Services
We are committed to providing special education students with opportunities along a continuum of educational services that offer access to and participation in appropriate activities in school and in the community. We uphold the principles established by both the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEIA) and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). These acts support the educational experience and protect the rights of students. We believe in a collaborative Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) development process and in the importance of contributions from students, parents, and professional staff. The combination of these perspectives helps to develop IEPs that enable students to become both productive learners and positive citizens in the school and community.
Across the continuum of special education services, the Edison Township Public Schools serve students with the following identified educational disabilities:
· Specific Learning Disability
· Communication Impairment
· Speech and Language Delay
· Emotional/Behavioral Disability
· Other Health Impairment
· Preschool Child with a Disability/ Developmental Delay
· Autism
· Multiply Disabled
· Cognitive Impairment
· Orthopedic Impairment
· Traumatic Brain Injury
· Hearing Impairment
· Visual Impairment
· Social Maladjustment
We understand that when a student begins receiving special education, they may step into a new world of teaching methods and services. Therefore, this site has been created for parents, teachers and students. It is intended to provide a basic understanding of the special education process, programs, resources and procedures within the District. We welcome your feedback. If you have particular items that you would like to see added to our site, or suggestions to help keep it accurate, relevant and user friendly please email Dr. Thomas Toohey.
If you have any questions or concerns specific to your child, please do not hesitate to call their school, their case manager or the Special Services Office. We look forward to partnering with you and supporting your children as they realize their personal and academic potential.
